DJI Mini 4 Pro: leaks, release date and price

Image
When it arrived in May 2023 the DJI Mini 3 Pro impressed us so much, we ranked it as the best compact drone for most people. It earned this accolade thanks to its compact size, intelligent obstacle avoidance and the low-light performance of its 4K camera. Its tiny dimensions saw it slot neatly into the sub-250g drone category, meaning it could be flown almost anywhere without restriction. Now it looks like DJI is preparing to announce a successor, likely called the Mini 4 Pro. The timing couldn’t be better from DJI, since new US legislation coming into effect on September 16 requires drones weighing more than 250g to constantly broadcast the location of both the pilot and the aircraft itself. If the successor to the Mini 3 Pro remains below that crucial 250g limit, then owners will be free to fly their drone without the need for registration or identification. Launching the Mini 4 Pro at the end of September , as was recently suggested, would be perfect timing from DJI. Updates

You may have missed JLab’s teeny tiny JBuds Mini but they’re set to see a big launch

Image
When it comes to the best true wireless earbuds , size matters – and big isn't necessarily better. Larger earbuds can be hard to fit, if you have smaller ears. Even if like me you have a head like a hippo's, the combination of large size and weight in some big earbuds can be wearing over longer periods.  So we're quite taken with the new JLab JBuds Mini, which are set to launch on September 1. They're smaller than many car key fobs in their case and they're absolutely tiny: each little bud weighs just 3.3g. We've already tried these buds, because our very own Matt Bolton got to play with a pair at CES earlier this year. He didn't get the chance to hear them, but he did get to experience their comfort. Matt has also tested their stablemates, the JLab Go Air Pop , which we think are the  best budget wireless earbuds in their price bracket and are essentially the same earbuds but larger – the JBuds Mini is 30% smaller.  The Air Pop have the same sized dri

Google wants to use generative AI to boost its security tools

Google is integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI) into a couple of its security products, to give the tools a boost and make them easier to use.  At its recent Google Cloud Next 23 event, the company announced its Duet AI will make its way to Mandiant Threat Intelligence, Chronicle Security Operations, and Security Command Center. Google’s head of UX for cloud security, Steph Hay, explained that the goal was to lower the burden on IT teams, minimize threats, and lower the barrier to entry into the cybersecurity space. Improving security posture “We’re really trying to supercharge security with generative AI to mitigate threats, and in particular prevent downstream impacts that our practitioners face today, to reduce the toil that the security teams deal with having to manage a growing attack surface, and really bridge the cyber talent gap,” Hay said. “AI is enabling security teams to improve their security posture by generating AI summaries to describe threats, by sea

Meta Quest 3 firmware leak reveals big depth mapping upgrade

All the signs are that Meta is going to fully unveil the Meta Quest 3 , and give us an on sale date, at its special event on September 27. Until then, we're learning more about the device through leaks – such as the latest one that reveals its depth mapping capabilities. In a clip dug out of the Meta Quest 3 firmware and posted to Reddit (via user Samulia and UploadVR ), we see a short animation visualizing how the depth mapping is going to work. In short, it looks pretty advanced, and way ahead of the Oculus Quest 2. We see a detailed mesh covering all of the objects in the room, and there seems to be some kind of object identification going on here as well – the couch is labeled with a couch icon, for example, so the Meta Quest 3 clearly knows what it is. The player avatar is then shown chasing a digital character around the room, as it jumps on and behind furniture. This is an example of mixed reality occlusion, where digital elements appear to be in the same world as phys

Starfield preloads are now live on Steam so you can get ahead of its massive file size

With Starfield releasing in a week, and early access beginning in a handful of days, players are getting set up to face what could be an incredibly lengthy download and a slight delay in take-off. But, for those who are keen to get stuck in from the moment the game unlocks, there are a few ways around these launch day download times.  Pre-loads for Starfield have been made available for those who are jumping in via Steam, so as of today you will be able to get ahead of the curve and start tackling the staggering 134.9GB file size, which is a good bit larger than those playing via Xbox Series X |S.  If you’re a proud owner of the premium edition on Xbox, you’ll have to download 116GB, or 100GB if you’re settling for the Standard Edition. Regardless of which platform you’re using, it'll be a lengthy download, so it’s definitely worth pre-loading now you have the chance.  For players on PC via PC Game Pass, or those on Xbox Series X|S, preloads for the title have been available

Microsoft is still blocking some of its biggest customers from running Windows apps

Microsoft’s decision to discourage users from running its software on other non-company clouds, by means of increased cost, is still causing a headache for Google Cloud Platform and Alibaba customers. Earlier this month, Redmond changed its terms to allow AWS customers to use its office software on the rival platform, however many are still being left out. A couple of weeks have passed since the change, and still, the company has not indicated whether similar changes may be reflected for Google and Alibaba. Microsoft discouraging rival cloud companies From August 1, Microsoft confirmed that “users with specific licenses may run Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise/business, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Visio on Amazon WorkSpaces” virtual desktop infrastructure. It's time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.  Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I'm still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it's good fun, but also difficult. What's more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a new variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.  But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints , you'll probably need some for this game too.  I'm a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who's been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Google Photos' Locked Folder can now keep your sensitive images safe on iOS

Google is expanding the reach of its Locked Folder tool on the Google Photos app so it will soon be available on iOS and web. This means that if you decide to switch from an Android device to an iPhone, you can still access your secure files without issue. It doesn’t appear like there’s any major difference between the three versions. All three types of users can store their content in a Locked Folder then back it up so it can be accessed across multiple devices. According to Google in the official announcement that you’ll be saving your files on “one of the world’s most advanced security infrastructures.” When it first launched, Locked Folder was exclusive to Google Photos on Android. It provided users a “passcode-protected space” for images or videos, ensuring that they won’t appear on your “photo grid or other apps.”  The problem was the Locked Folders feature wasn't available outside of Android smartphones, as we just covered. So if an iPhone owner wanted to hide particu

iPhone 15 to be revealed at September 12 Apple event – here's what we know

Apple is hosting a ‘Wonderlust’ event at its Apple Park compound on September 12 at 10am PST / 1pm EST / 6pm BST. Nothing has been officially confirmed although there are a variety of clues. For instance, the iPhone 15. Notable Apple insider Mark Gurman claimed on X this will be the official reveal of the tech giant’s upcoming flagship phone. Plus, it follows the company’s MO of announcing mobile devices in mid-September.  Story: Apple announces September 12 iPhone 15, new Apple Watch, and AirPods event — https://t.co/Debtfo2rlO https://t.co/NUiTne6JQy August 29, 2023 See more Gurman states in a new Bloomberg report the company will introduce “two entry-level models and two high-end models” for the iPhone series. The lower-end devices, as he refers to them, will most likely be called the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. Intel's latest Xeon chips look to give your data center a major power boost

Even though Intel’s 5th Gen Xeon (Emerald Rapids) chips won’t be launching until the final three months of this year, we already know what to expect in 2024. The company has lifted the wraps off its up-and-coming Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids products, and yet again, there’s a clear emphasis on artificial intelligence while tackling some of the industry’s biggest issues. Adding to the existing Performance-core (P-core) architecture will be a new Efficient-core (E-core) architecture to help data centers in their ongoing (and frankly colossal) battle with energy efficiency. Intel’s 2024 lineup will be even better for the environment According to the company’s announcement , it is the provider of the best AI performance on any CPU, and the processors with P-cores (Granite Rapids) promise to give a significant boost to those looking to carry out intensive AI workloads. Windows Copilot leak suggests deeper assimilation with Windows 11 features

Key Windows 11 features may soon be customizable as Microsoft further integrates its Windows Copilot AI assistant into the operating system. This tidbit comes from tech news site Windows Latest , which claims to have discovered new .json (JavaScript Object Notation) files within recent preview builds of Windows 11. These files apparently hint at future upgrades for the desktop AI assistant. For example, a “TaskManagerService-ai-plugin.json” was found which is supposedly a “plugin for Task Manager integration”. If this ever comes out, it could give users the ability to “monitor or close running apps using” Copilot. In total, six are currently tested and they affect various aspects of Windows 11. Next, there is an “AccessbilityTools-ai-plugin.json” that gives Copilot a way to “control accessibility [tools]. This would make it "easier for those with [a] disability to navigate through the system.” Third is “ai-plugin-WindowsSettings.json” for controlling important Windows 11 set

OLED iPad Pros tipped for 2024 with M3 chips and a new Magic Keyboard

It would seem the iPad Pro models are going to get quite the revamp in 2024, with new screens and new chipsets – a revamp which is probably overdue for these premium tablets, which have had rather minor updates since 2018. As per the usually reliable Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter at Bloomberg, Apple is hoping that the upgrades it introduces will "shake up" a stagnant tablet market and spark some fresh interest in the most expensive iPads. There will be two new models in the first half of next year, Gurman says, both with OLED displays – a switch that's long been rumored . Right now the 11-inch iPad Pro uses standard LED and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro uses mini-LED. The 11-inch screen size will be retained, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will become a 13-inch model. The iPad Pro screens are already very good, but the introduction of OLED should mean that they get crisper and brighter, and even better at color reproduction.
