Another leak hints at a January 14 launch of Galaxy S21 series

Image
The Samsung Galaxy S21 series is going to be the first major launch of 2021. And while leaks have been flowing left, right and centre revealing almost everything about the upcoming smartphones , it’s the launch date that has remained a mystery . We had earlier reported that Samsung’s large store in India is already accepting pre-orders for the upcoming phone with a tentative global launch date of January 14. Now a leaked invite not only hints at the presence of a new colourway but also suggests that the launch is impending. However, another report hinted at a January 29 launch date! But now, going by a tweet shared by Ishan Agarwal, who has been fairly accurate with his leaks in the past, the phone flagship series from Samsung will be unveiled on January 14 and the live stream of the Unpacked event may start at 3 p.m. GMT or 8.30 p.m. IST. Was the Samsung Galaxy S21 release date  just teased  by Samsung itself? Samsung Galaxy S21:  5 big facts  we've got left to learn

Google Cloud Print to go out with 2020

2020 is ending and so is another Google product. Google Cloud Print will no longer be supported by the platform from Friday, December 31.  The function was created to support a printing framework from ChromeOS when it launched. This cloud based printing companion made it possible for those using ChromeOS to print, but also required printers to be cloud ready which wasn't always the case.  In 2010 when it launched, not all printers could connect to the internet, making this a bit of a pain for those who had hopped on the ChromeOS bandwagon.  Since most people weren't willing to buy a new printer to use this service, Google quickly gave ChromeOS its own printing service that could work on a local network.  This made Google Cloud, their quick patch solution, obsolete.  Google announced last year it was taking the plunge to shut down this service as there are very few who still use it. The time has finally come, with Google recommending those last stragglers switch to printi

Nvidia RTX 3080 is apparently coming to the most powerful gaming laptops

A new leak suggests that Nvidia is preparing to launch mobile versions of its RTX 3080 , RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 graphics cards, with these new mobile GPUs powering high-end gaming laptops from the beginning of 2021. The leak, discovered by Twitter user @momomo_us , was from Skikk, a gaming PC maker from the Netherlands, which in a webpage (that has since been removed) apparently listed several laptops running on Nvidia’s as yet unannounced mobile RTX 3000 series GPUs. Where to buy Nvidia RTX 3080: find stock here What are Max-Q GPUs ? These are the best graphics cards The laptops in question came with either an Nvidia RTX 3060 with 6GB of GDDR6 memory, an Nvidia RTX 3070 Max-Q with 8GB of GDDR6 memory, and an RTX 3080 Max-Q with 16GB of GDDR6. New laptop GPUs What’s interesting about this leak is that at the moment, Nvidia’s RTX 2000 series are the latest GPUs available in laptops, with the RTX 2080 currently being the most powerful graphics card you can get in a laptop. You can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free

When Windows 10 was released in 2015 Microsoft made a major push for the new software by allowing Windows 7 users to upgrade for free.  This clever marketing promo was only meant to last one year but it seems it has yet to be disabled. This meant that if you wanted to do the upgrade but were worried you would have to pay the full price you can actually still get away with it for free.  A user on Reddit claiming to be a Microsoft employee first brought attention to this loophole before others tested it out, proving it's still working.  The only condition is that you need to have a legitimate download of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, with a certified product key.  Although Windows 10 has had many pitfalls with users complaining endlessly since it arrived, operating on an older system means you're probably lagging behind as fewer updates are pushed by the company.  If you're keen to move on to the much improved Windows 10 (with all new problems and quirks) then this is a gre

Gaming industry needs transparent, clearer rules: Octro

Image
The worst year for the world may be the best year for the gaming platforms. To beat the tedium of being holed up within their homes, many people sought the diversion that online gaming platforms provided. Like elsewhere, in India, too the gaming industry thrived, and it got further impetus with the ban on a few popular Chinese gaming apps including PUBG Mobile . Yet, it was not all easy going for the industry as some State governments thought it fit to ban online gaming platforms in their respective States on the grounds that they (online games) encouraged gambling and, in cases, have also led to suicides.  This ban in one State, and kosher in another, is what is worrying the industry. "We desire clearer and transparent laws that do not have room for ambiguity," says Manav Sethi, Global Chief Marketing Officer, Octro Inc, in an exclusive chat with TechRadar India . He adds predictable regulatory regime will help the companies to know where they stand and also help in s

2020 in smartphones: from 5G to foldables, iPhone 12 mini to Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

It is a little known fact that 2020 has been the longest year in recorded human history. Quite how a sum total of over sixty months managed to take place across the same period filled by a mere twelve the year prior will no doubt perplex all concerned for some time to come. Of course, we know what happened in 2020 - and how do you sum up a year like this? Whether delayed phone releases, cancelled phone shows or otherwise, going forwards in 2021 we can likely expect that many of the trends of 2020 will have long shadows. Ten smartphone trends we want to see in 2021

Image
If there’s one thing that 2020 proved , it was that our reliance on technology is only going to get higher. In a matter of days, our smartphones became our hub for entertainment, documenting, payments, contact tracing and more, making them even more indispensable from our lives. Amid a global slowdown, India actually defied odds by registering all-time high shipments as well as a higher average selling price, highlighting the untapped potential our country has to offer. Cheaper data rates, a strong push towards digitalization, immense competition across segments and an increase in the demand made smartphones a particularly interesting segment that took strides in the right direction. Even with a lot more options in the market, there were far fewer terrible devices that we couldn’t recommend. To keep the momentum going, we’d like to delve deeper into the space and look at ways on how to improve the journey can be better for a consumer — from better products to more effective communic

Mobile gaming has had a phenomenal year, even though there haven’t been as many marquee games releasing directly onto the traditional App Store and Google Play Store platforms in 2020. Instead, this year has seen alternatives and standout indie hits arrive on mobile, as well as older titles becoming big trends in the world of mobile gaming. Cloud gaming has also become a far greater focus in 2020, and it’s sure to grow exponentially in 2021 as we see services like Google Stadia , Xbox Games Pass and Amazon Luna expand onto more devices and smartphones. We’ve put together five of the biggest highlights of 2020 in mobile gaming, which has been a landmark year for games, even without the new PS5 and Xbox Series X console launches.  1.
