For women who assembled iPhones at a Foxconn plant in India, crowded dorms without flush toilets and food sometimes crawling with worms were problems to be endured for the paycheck. Microsoft Teams update minimizes the opportunity for miscommunication

Getting your ideas across in Microsoft Teams will soon be even easier as Microsoft is working on a new update for its video conferencing software that will allow users to see messages in chat and participants in a video call at the same time. Back in June, the software giant added chat bubbles to its online collaboration tool so that users wouldn't miss private messages sent during a video call. Just like in WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, these chat bubbles display a floating notification on your screen and according to Microsoft, they also make “chat more central to the conversation”. While the introduction of chat bubbles enabled Teams users to see their private messages during meetings, Microsoft is now planning to make them available for group chats so that everyone can keep up with the conversations happening via text as well as those taking place in a video call at the same time. WhatsApp doubles down on business searches within the app itself

Image
In a big thrust into e-commerce and business, WhatsApp is rolling out a feature to let users search for nearby businesses, right within the app. The feature, when it becomes fully mainstream, will help the messaging platform to make an impact in one area where it has not made much headway - business & commerce segment.  According to the ever reliable team at WABetainfo , WhatsApp had made available a nifty business directory to users in Sao Paulo a couple of months back. And the new search option for nearby businesses is an extension of that. "When you search for something within WhatsApp, there will be a new section called “Businesses Nearby”: when you select the category, the results of business accounts will be filtered based on your choice," the report said . Businesses will be happy with the putative feature as it will allow them to become more visible, directly from inside WhatsApp. WhatsApp Pay gets down to business: Pilot scheme in villages to tap small sho

Your next OLED TV could hold your Elf on a Shelf, too

Image
LG Display is almost hell-bent on making its flexible, transparent OLED technology a part of every piece of furniture in our homes, offices, and department stores.  The South Korean tech giant latest targets include windows, display cases, and even bookshelves. At CES 2022, the company is announcing a handful of oddball and exciting flexible and semi-transparent display innovations, including a bookshelf, called OLED Shelf, that doubles as a larger, hanging display. OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens are now thin and light enough to go almost anywhere, in part because they do not require backlighting. Last week, the company unveiled OLED screens in a rotating easy chair and as a head-to-toe curved display for a spin bicycle. (Image credit: LG) For its OLED Shelf, LG hung two 55-inch 40%-transparent OLED panels from a wall shelf (LG claims these are the largest transparent OLEDs in the world). The two screens are serially connected and hang down to another base she

Xiaomi itself has disproven that last-minute Xiaomi 12 specs leak

We've seen quite a few Xiaomi 12 leaks over the last few months, and with the series' launch only days away (on December 28), we're soon going to find out which were accurate and which were bogus. But one recent specs leak has already been proven wrong. On Christmas Eve, tech fan site Xiaomiui shared some details about the phone: apparently, it'll have a 6.28-inch AMOLED 1080 x 2400 120Hz screen, three rear cameras with a 50MP main and 20MP selfie snapper, 67W charging and a 4,500mAh battery, and Harman Kardon-tuned speakers. We already know some of those things, like its 6.2-inch screen , because Xiaomi has previously teased some phone specs for its Mi 12 phone - other things, such as the 67W powering, have previously been leaked before but not confirmed. Xiaomi confirmed one other spec on Christmas Day though. Via its Weibo channel, it confirmed that the Xiaomi 12 series will get 32MP selfie cameras - that contradicts the leak, and makes us doubt some of the ot

2021 in smartphones: losing LG, Samsung Galaxy S21, iPhone 13, Pixel 6 and more

Image
2021 has been yet another odd year for most of us, but it has also been an exciting one in the world of smartphones, with a lot of change in the Android space and improvements for Apple’s iPhone line. We’re here to run you through all the big launches as they happened and remind you how the year went down in smartphones. Let’s get started with the very beginning of 2021. January to March - A messy conference season  The Samsung Galaxy S21 (Image credit: Future) CES 2021 was the first virtual CES ever, thanks to the ongoing pandemic discouraging people from congregating. Because in late January, LG revealed that it might stop making smartphones , whic

As the year begins to end and people focus on taking a well-earned break over the Christmas holidays, it's a good time to take stock of life, work, and love. We're only focused on the second of those three today and specifically email usage.  TechRadar Pro has commissioned an exclusive poll of 500 respondents from OnePulse showing which email services people use and some details about how.  Surprise, surprise Gmail comes out on top.  (Image credit: Geralt / Pixabay) A lot of people absolutely hate email, and with good reason. Clients, especially default clients like Apple Mail, are often slow and geared towards casual users, not power users at work.  On top of that, Slack and Teams , plus a bunch of others, have sprouted up to fulfil work-specific chat needs - even Meta has got in on the action with Workplace .  To email or not to email  So, let's break down the results.  According to our survey, the dominant email service is Gmail – and it's not even
