Why securing your smartphone might be the best move you make

We're all aware of the need to keep our computing devices secure, with a range of security solutions available for PCs and laptops - but what about our mobile devices? Smartphones have made huge leaps forward in terms of power and capabilities over the past decade, becoming high-level computing devices in their own right, holding not just our apps, photos and games, but also becoming an entry point for work. With many of us now embracing hybrid working, having a smartphone geared for work is a crucial tool, but they also need to be kept safe from cyber-threats - so here's some tips to keep your mobile devices safe and secure. Keeping safe online Sadly, some parts of the Internet aren’t really a safe place to visit, and this can be true when mobile browsing as well as being on a PC. Dodgy websites can look to infect your device with malware or other malicious software, installing trackers or keyloggers, with phishing websites looking to scam their victims out of their hard

The OnePlus 11 Concept is the coolest smartphone you’ll never have

Image
When OnePlus teased its OnePlus 11 Concept ahead of MWC 2023 earlier this month, we were quick to speculate that the mysterious device looked more like a gaming PC than a phone .  Well, as it turns out, that assessment wasn’t too far wrong. Having now handled the OnePlus 11 Concept for ourselves at the annual Barcelona trade show, we can confidently say that this phone is indeed the most gaming PC-like handset we’ve ever seen. But hold the applause, because we also know that the OnePlus 11 Concept definitely won’t be earning a spot on our list of the best gaming phones any time soon.  Unfortunately, the OnePlus 11 Concept is just that: a concept. In essence, it’s a prototype version of the OnePlus 11 (you can read our thoughts on that phone in our OnePlus 11 review ) that’s intended to demonstrate how gaming PC-style liquid cooling technology can be applied to future OnePlus smartphones – which is certainly a neat idea, albeit one in the early stages of development.  That said, t

Leaked iPhone 15 Pro Max images show off the phone from all angles

Leaks around the iPhone 15 are arriving thick and fast at the moment, with the latest imagery reveal focusing on the most expensive iPhone 15 Pro Max model – and there are a few changes from the current model to talk about. These renderings are courtesy of well-known tipster Ice Universe , and we get a look at the iPhone 15 Pro Max from just about every angle possible. The images are apparently based on schematic information that Apple has given to its supply chain partners. Intriguingly, the same leak refers to the "iPhone 15 Pro Max (or iPhone 15 Ultra)" – we had previously thought that the iPhone 15 Ultra might be a completely separate model, but the implication here is that it will be rebranded Pro Max. The first zettaflop systems will need nuclear power, AMD CEO claims

The CEO of chip giant AMD has said that the high-performance computing (HPC) industry needs to start becoming significantly more efficient, or it will need to turn to nuclear energy. AMD CPU and GPU performance typically double every 2.4 years which is good progress by any means, but power efficiency has not seen such considerable improvements.  Speaking at International Solid-State Circuits Conference, Dr Lisa Su noted that with zettaflop HPCs on the horizon, we should turn our attention to performance per unit of energy in order to make zettaflop computation a reality. Going nuclear According to current trends and assuming that progress doesn’t slow down, AMD reckons that zettaflop computation could be here in about a decade (although Intel reckons it could be here in about half that time). The reality is that when they arrive isn’t as important as when they will become available on a usable, energy-efficient scale. Currently, Su generously estimates that an HPC capable of per

Google TV is getting a free update that makes it easier to find what you want

Image
Smart TV interfaces provide a necessary portal to streaming, smart home control, cloud-based gaming, and multiple other apps and services, but they are typically cluttered with unwanted content recommendations, free ad-supported TV offerings, and, now more often than not, in-your-face advertisements. Google TV, which powers Google’s Chromecast with Google TV streaming stick and is also used as the smart interface on the best 4K TVs from the likes of Sony, TCL, Hisense, and Philips, is one of the more prominent third-party streaming options for TV makers. But it has also been faulted for screen clutter, and more recently for leaning heavily into ads . The company does occasionally tweak its interface to make it more user-friendly, however, with the latest improvements coming to Google TV users this week. Citing research that average households now subscribe to more than five different apps for entertainment, Google TV has launched four new content pages to help viewers find program

Latest Garmin Forerunner 965 leak shows off redesigned map and system UI

Image
New details for Garmin’s upcoming smartwatch, the Forerunner 965 , have been leaked by yet another hasty online store giving us our first high-resolution look at the device. The images come from swimming retailer SwimOutlet showing off the device in two different colors: a metallic black and a bright greenish-yellow. At a glance, it appears the bezel around the watch face is smaller compared to the Forerunner 955 . The extra room is probably for the new 1.4-inch AMOLED screen the upcoming watch is reported to have. Other shots reveal what the system UI will look like on the device such as more information being displayed at once on the main screen. The map feature has also been revamped. This time around, step-by-step directions will take up less space on the Forerunner 965’s face, making it easier to see where you’re going when using the map. Other than that, not much else was revealed in the SwimOutlet listing. It’s unknown what other features, new or returning like the ECG app ,

Microsoft tells Exchange admins to remove some previous antivirus restrictions

Some Microsoft Exchange folders and processes, which the company previously suggested be excluded from antivirus scans for stability reasons, should no longer be excluded, it has announced. Explaining the change of heart, Microsoft said the processes no longer affect the stability, or the performance, of Exchange servers, adding that it could even be beneficial as some threat actors could have hidden backdoors in there, as well. Some of the processes and folders include Temporary ASP.NET files, Inetsrv folders, as well as the PowerShell and w3wp processes. Exclude no more "Keeping these exclusions may prevent detections of IIS webshells and backdoor modules, which represent the most common security issues," the Exchange Team said. "We've validated that removing these processes and folders doesn't affect performance or stability when using Microsoft Defender on Exchange Server 2019 running the latest Exchange Server updates." The new recommendations af

Americans lost $8.8 billion to cyber scams in 2022

New data from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has revealed the astonishing scale of scams across America, which accounted for billions in losses last year. In 2022, the FTC reported $8.8 billion in losses due to fraud, an increase of more than 30% on the previous year. The report shares insights into the most common types of fraud to help protect consumers. Despite fewer reports of fraudulent activity last year compared with 2021, financial losses suffered a significant increase. Scams are on the rise The most popular type of fraud reported last year was imposter fraud, which sees people of malintent pretend to be somebody they’re not to tease money out of unsuspecting vulnerable consumers. Other popular scams according to the 2.4 million reported instances included online shopping; prizes, sweepstakes, and lotteries; investments; and business and job opportunities. The heaviest hitting type according to financial losses was investment scams, likely owing part of its succ

New tech could bring affordable, hyper realistic screens with 1000+ Hz refresh rates

A group of researchers from Nottingham Trent University, the Australian National University and the University of New South Wales Canberra in Australia have produced a proof of concept technology that could shake the very foundations of the $100 billion-plus monitor, display and TV industries. By swapping the traditional liquid crystal cells used in such devices for a new technology called metasurfaces (these are electrically tunable arrays of nanoparticles), the researchers claim this will “offer significant benefits over current liquid crystal displays”.  What benefits? Well, there’s quite a few. Metasurfaces are much smaller in size (up to 10 times smaller) than crystal cells, which translates into significantly smaller pixel pitches and - in theory - much higher pixel densities. Pixels tightly grouped together means more seamless, hyper-realistic graphics, great for creative professionals that would crave such innovation in photo editing monitors . “Today the main factor deter

Magic Eraser, the Google Pixel's best trick, is coming to your iPhone and Galaxy

Some of the hottest selling points for Google Pixel phones are the exclusive Google software features, especially the photo editing tools. If you want to use Google’s amazing Photo Unblur, for instance, you must have a Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro . Now Magic Eraser , one of Google’s premier Pixel features, is coming to myriad other devices, including iPhones and competitor Android smartphones.  Magic Eraser launched with the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones. When the Pixel 6a was announced, it did not have Magic Eraser on board, but the feature was added in a later update . The Pixel 6 Pro launched with Magic Eraser (Image credit: TechRadar) Google says that all Google One subscribers, including iOS users, will be able to use Magic Eraser in Google Photos. All Google Pixel owners should have access to the feature as well. Google One is a cloud storage and VPN service plan that gives you more space for your free Google account. I can't believe Zangief still has his Double Lariat in Street Fighter 6

Image
The latest characters for Street Fighter 6 were revealed at Sony's State of Play presentation. World Warriors Zangief and Cammy, alongside newcomer Lily, will be joining Street Fighter 6 's base roster when the game launches for PS5 , Xbox Series X |S and PC on June 2, 2023. Zangief and Cammy have retained most of their iconic moves and playstyles. Grappler Zangief is all about command throws and heavy-hitting sluggers and suplexes. Meanwhile, Cammy's rushdown style looks fully intact, with swift punches and kicks to leave her opponent little room to counterattack. Newcomer Lily looks a little more interesting, sporting a short stature and a pair of boomerang-like armaments. She's certainly a more lighthearted character, and has the potential to be a new fan-favorite alongside other new challengers like Marisa and Manon. For better or worse (Image credit: Capcom) Street Fighter fans have been highly anticipating the reveal of these three characters in the
